Gov. Kay Orr of Nebraska vetoed a measure that would have allowed for paying University of Nebraska football players.
The governor returned the bill without her signature to the clerk of the legislature and said in an accompanying letter that she objected to it because “an expression to the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. through the enactment of a statute is inappropriate.â€
The bill, sponsored by State Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha, would have provided for payments to Nebraska football players upon the adoption by four Big Eight states.
