Long Beach : Elementary School Planned
A new elementary school planned on a parcel next to Long Beach City College’s Pacific Coast Campus will result in the relocation of the campus entrance on Alamitos Avenue.
Under the plan, which has been approved by the Long Beach Unified School District, the 1,000-student elementary school will be built on a parcel now owned by the college at the corner of Orange Avenue and 20th Street near College Intermediate School. A magnet now serving 271 fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders, the existing campus will be incorporated into the new one, which will include all elementary grades including kindergarten.
As part of the process, planners say, the portion of Alamitos Avenue that crosses the campus will be closed and the college entrance on Alamitos moved to Orange Avenue and 19th Street.
According to school district spokesman Dick Van der Laan, the plan must be approved by the college and the city. “We don’t expect anything to happen for several months,†Van der Laan said.
