42 Arrested in Easter Anti-Nuclear Protest
MERCURY, Nev. — Authorities arrested 42 anti-nuclear activists in an Easter Sunday demonstration at the Nevada Test Site. About 60 people attended the event, part of an annual protest dubbed the Lenten Desert Experience.
“It was all very quiet and very peaceful,†said Energy Department spokeswoman Barbara Joerg.
She said the 42 were arrested on misdemeanor trespass charges when they crossed a cattle guard on the road leading to the main gate at the secret site 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
About 170 protesters were on hand for Good Friday services; 52 people were arrested in that activity.
The demonstration marks the end of a 47-day observance at the site.
More then 2,000 people were arrested in 10 days of activities last month. The Easter Sunday protest came as the Soviet Union announced its third nuclear test of 1988.
