College Roundup : Santa Barbara Edges Titans, 7-6
Coming off an impressive performance in the Busch Challenge II baseball tournament in New Orleans, Cal State Fullerton suffered a letdown with a 7-6 loss to UC Santa Barbara Thursday night in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Fullerton.
Fullerton, which had won all its round-robin games in New Orleans, couldn’t stop Santa Barbara from rallying to victory Thursday night.
Trailing by 4-3, Santa Barbara scored four runs in the seventh inning, then held off the Titans for the victory.
The loss drops Fullerton to 23-10 overall and 2-2 in PCAA play. The Titans trail Fresno State and Nevada Las Vegas, both of which are 4-0. Santa Barbara is 16-23, 1-3.
“We didn’t play as well as we have been,†Fullerton Coach Larry Cochell said. “We didn’t make some good pitches in the seventh inning, and that hurt us.â€
Longo Garcia (7-2) started for the Titans but was replaced in the seventh with one out after he gave up two walks and RBI singles to Craig Middlekauff and Mike Czarnetzki.
Cochell brought in reliever Paul Johnson, who gave up an RBI double to Ed Landphere and an RBI single Rex Tagliaferri.
The Titans rallied in the seventh as Mike Ross hit his 11th home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center field, off starter Dave Boss (6-6), who was then replaced by Renay Bryand. He held the Titans to just one hit in the final 2 innings to earn the save.
Fresno State 4, UC Irvine 2--Lance Shedelut hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning as Fresno State (30-3, 4-0) won its 13th straight. UC Irvine had the tying runs on base in the ninth, but starting pitcher John Salles (9-0) got a double play to end the game. John Seeburger went 2 for 4 with an RBI for Irvine (20-16-1, 1-3).
In nonconference baseball:
Southern California College 8, Wisconsin Whitewater 3--Steve Milledge went 2 for 3 with a home run and 3 RBIs to lead host Southern California (11-17-1).
Christ College Irvine 16, Pomona-Pitzer 9--Darrick Brunk went 2 for 4 with 2 triples and 3 RBIs to lead host Christ College (7-24).
In Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. softball:
Cal State Fullerton 1-2, Hawaii 0-1--In the first game, Fullerton had no hits but still won as freshman Anjie Bryant (17-4) threw a four-hitter at Hawaii. Missy Coombes drove in the game’s only run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. In the second game, Charis Monroe and Cathi Hall each drove in runs in the seventh to give Fullerton (33-9) the victory.
In nonconference men’s tennis:
UC Irvine 8, Utah 4--Mike Briggs defeated Chris Entzell, 6-2, 6-4, for host Irvine (17-3), which is ranked sixth in the nation. Briggs is 21-10.
Rollins 7, Chapman 2--Mike Salmon defeated Olivier Amerlinck, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4, as Rollins, the fourth-ranked team in NCAA Division II, defeated the No. 1-ranked Panthers (15-8) at Chapman. Miles Walker had one of the two Chapman victories as he defeated Pat Emmet, 6-4, 7-6.
