Infant in Mother’s Lap Dies in Car Crash
A 2-month-old boy riding in his teen-age mother’s lap in a car driven by his grandfather was killed Sunday when the car spun out of control on a freeway in South El Monte, authorities said.
The infant was thrown from the car when it was pitched down a 50-foot embankment off the eastbound Pomona Freeway at Rosemead Boulevard, the California Highway Patrol said. The car apparently spun out when a tire blew out, causing the vehicle to swerve out of control.
The child was pronounced dead at the scene. His mother, Anita Barrios, 14, his grandfather, who was the driver, and two other adults in the car were treated for minor injuries.
