FELIXSTOWE, England — A British North Sea ferry carrying 348 passengers and crew docked safely here Thursday after a fire broke out in its engine room, and it had to be towed six miles to port, a Coast Guard spokesman said.
The fire broke out aboard the 18,732-ton Nordic toward the end of a crossing from the Belgian port of Zeebrugge to Felixstowe. Rescue helicopters and tugboats raced to the scene, prepared for an emergency evacuation. But the fire was put out in two hours, and the ferry was towed by eight tugs the rest of the way.
Last year, 193 people died when a British North Sea ferry capsized minutes after leaving Zeebrugge.
