Stuck Up Bridge Gets Drivers Down; 20-Mile Traffic Jam

PLANTATION KEY, Fla. — Engineers used two cranes today to force down a drawbridge stuck in the up position for nearly 18 hours, releasing thousands of angry motorists trapped in a 20-mile traffic jam on the only highway in the Florida Keys.
Traffic crawled along the 120-mile Overseas Highway, the only ground link between Miami and Key West, immediately after the bridge came down at 8:15 a.m. Florida Highway Patrol Lt. William Bass said it would take a while before things returned to normal.
Other Florida highway patrolmen said many of the motorists were upset.
“We’ve got a lot of people with attitude,” said Highway Patrol spokesman Gregory Harris. “People keep calling up and griping at us like it’s our fault.”
