Local News in Brief : Apology for Korea Article
- Share via
Rolling Stone magazine has agreed to publish follow-up articles on Koreans and Korean-Americans, set up an internship program for Asian-American students and take other steps to ease the ill feeling stirred by publication of a recent article on Korea, it was announced Wednesday.
Asian community figures in Los Angeles had demanded an apology for the Feb. 11 article, titled “Seoul Brothers,” which they contended portrayed Koreans in stereotypical terms.
Terms of the agreement, released by the Asian American Community Coalition, included the magazine’s promise to “sensitize and educate” the Rolling Stone staff about Asian issues, to publish an apology for the offending article and to publish a full page of letters responding to it.
Rolling Stone Executive Editor Robert Wallace, who previously apologized at a Los Angeles press conference for the article, said Wednesday that Asian community figures showed in the meetings with him that they respect “the editorial freedom and independence of Rolling Stone,” while the magazine recognizes that the Korean-American community “does have to deal with unfair racial stereotypes.”
