Northwest lawmakers and representatives of the timber industry said the new U.S.-Canada free trade treaty will do little to open Canadian markets to U.S.-manufactured plywood, but Reagan Administration officials said it was a step in the right direction. Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) and Rep. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) said the treaty will allow Canadian plywood manufacturers unrestricted access to American markets, but only 10% of the Canadian market or less will be opened to U.S. producers. Wyden said Congress should draft strong language covering plywood trade when it considers implementing language for the treaty later this year.
