Catcher Benito Santiago, who sewed up National League rookie of the year honors in 1987 with his 34-game hitting streak, signed a one-year contract with the San Diego Padres. Santiago, 23, will be paid about $175,00 in 1988. He made $63,500 last season, while batting .300 with 18 home runs and 79 RBIs.
