Valley College’s Johnson Named Top Player in SCC

Dametra Johnson, a 5-10 sophomore forward who averaged 25.2 points to lead Valley College in scoring, was selected most valuable player in the Southern California Conference.
Johnson was second in the conference in scoring and third in rebounding at 7.5 a game. She led Valley to a record of 27-3 and a share of the conference title with College of the Desert at 11-1.
Valley plays Merritt at 6 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals of the state tournament at American River College in Sacramento.
Valley’s Bernadette Tillis, Ruth Aguilar and Traci Atkins joined Johnson on the first team.
Teammates Roxanne Owens and Shagarro Lattin received honorable mention.
Aguilar led the team in rebounding with an average of 12 a game and was second in scoring at 16.2. Tillis averaged 12.8 assists to lead the SCC. Atkins averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Valley Coach Doug Michelson was selected SCC coach of the year in his first season with the Monarchs.
