College Basketball Roundup : Pitt Beats Boston College; Smith 2nd on Scoring List

Charles Smith scored 23 points to become the second-leading scorer in Pitt history, leading the seventh-ranked Panthers past Boston College, 87-79, Monday night in a Big East game at Pittsburg.
Pitt (21-4 overall, 11-3 in the Big East) broke a 38-38 halftime tie with an 18-6 surge and Boston College (15-12, 6-10) didn’t threaten again.
Smith hit 7 of 13 shots from the floor, including his first career three-pointer which gave him 1,916 points, one more than Larry Harris scored from 1974-78.
Dana Barros scored 32 points for the Eagles, who pulled even with five straight points at the end of the half, two on free throws after a technical foul against Pitt Coach Paul Evans before Barros hit a three-point shot.
Louisville 71, Memphis State 69--Mike Abram hit a 16-foot jump shot with 10 seconds left and the Cardinals scored the last six points to overcome the Wildcats at Louisville and clinch the Metro Conference championship.
Memphis State (16-10, 5-6) hit six straight free throws to take a 69-65 lead with 2:13 left before Louisville (19-9, 9-3) began its comeback. Herbert Crook hit a jumper and two free throws to tie the game, 69-69, with 1:15 left.
Crook and Pervis Ellison scored 16 points each for Louisville.
Georgetown 73, Providence 63--Mark Tillmon scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half at Landover, Md., and the Hoyas handed the Friars their fifth straight Big East defeat.
Providence (10-16, 4-11) cut a 15-point deficit to 58-52, but Tillmon hit a three-pointer, a long jumper for two points and two free throws to give Georgetown (18-8, 8-7) a 65-54 lead.
North Carolina State 87, North Carolina Asheville 76--Chucky Brown scored 25 points and Vinnie Del Negro added 23 as the 16th-ranked Wolfpack downed the Bulldogs at Raleigh, N.C.
The Wolfpack (21-6) rolled to a 52-32 halftime lead.
