Local News in Brief : New Harvey Mudd Leader

Henry E. Riggs has been named president of Harvey Mudd College and will start his new job in July, officials announced Tuesday. Riggs, 52, vice president for development at Stanford University, will replace D. Kenneth Baker, who has been president of the Claremont school since 1976 and is retiring.
Riggs, a former executive of Silicon Valley electronics firms, began to teach industrial engineering at Stanford in 1967 and became chairman of the industrial engineering management department there in 1978. He became a Stanford vice president in 1983, taking over enormous fund-raising activities.
Harvey Mudd College, one of the five schools in the Claremont Colleges consortium, has 528 students and specializes in engineering, mathematics and the sciences.
