Work to Start on Eastside Y

Construction will start Tuesday on the $2.9-million Weingart-East Los Angeles YMCA at 2830-2910 Whittier Blvd.
The complex will include a child-care center, classrooms, meeting rooms, a wellness and fitness center, indoor swimming pool and office space. A variety of programs will be offered at the facility, including English and typing courses and frequent outings.
Construction funds came from several nonprofit organizations, including the Weingart and Ahmanson foundations. The East Los Angeles YMCA plans to move out of its temporary quarters on 1st Street when the new facility opens early next year.
