Arizona 8, UC Irvine 2--Trevor Hoffmann, who played at Savanna High School and Cypress College, was 4 for 4 with a double, triple and RBI to lead Arizona past Irvine in a nonconference game at Tucson.
Arizona, which had 12 hits, scored four runs in the seventh to lead, 6-1.
Irvine’s Craig Brink (0-1) gave up four hits, two runs and two walks in four innings for the loss.
Arizona’s Jason Klonoski (1-0) gave up one hit, one walk and one unearned run and struck out six.
Jeff Oberdank went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Anteaters, who lost the second game of the season-opening three-game series against Arizona. The Anteaters won Friday, 10-3.
In men’s nonconference swimming and diving:
UC Irvine 139, Pomona-Pitzer 75--Mauro Macchi won the 100 freestyle (48.39) and 200 individual medley (2:05.91) to lead the Anteaters. Irvine also had first-place performances from Nick Ro in the 200 freestyle (1:53.09); Tom Jordan in the one- and three-meter springboard, and Brian Judd, Macchi, Jay Glossbrenner and Matt Wright in the 200 freestyle relay (1:28.51).
In women’s nonconference swimming and diving:
Irvine 128, Pomona-Pitzer 90--Lisa Williams won the 500 freestyle (5:20.31) and 1,000 freestyle (11:02.30) and Heidi Werstler won the 200 freestyle (2:03.38) and the 200 butterfly (2:22.22) to lead the Anteaters. In diving, Irvine received victories from Kirsten Wolf (one meter) and Trishna Coleman (three meter).
