Black Teen in TV Film Found Dead in S. Africa

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa â€”  A black teen-ager who appeared in recent CBS and other foreign documentaries was found shot in the head five days after police questioned him about the interviews, his family and police said today.

The body of Godfrey Sicelo Dlomo, 18, was discovered Monday under a tree near his grandmother’s house in Soweto, said his mother, Sylvia Jele.

Police said they found the body after receiving an anonymous tip.

Jele said in a telephone interview that her son had been hiding from police “because they said they would kill him� but that he had made a weekend visit to Soweto to see his family.

Authorities said they expected relatives to blame them.

“We want to know why was he killed after he made a statement to us (the police),� said Brig. Leon Mellet, a spokesman for the Ministry of Law and Order.

Dlomo was interviewed in the CBS documentary “Children of Apartheid,� which was broadcast in December in the United States. He also appeared in a news program on Dutch television in March, and friends said he was interviewed by the British Broadcasting Corp.

Dlomo was questioned Jan. 20 at Johannesburg police headquarters about statements he made in the documentaries, said Mellet.

Mellet said Dlomo “was identified as the one who had made serious allegations� against the police. He said Dlomo alleged that he had been beaten and tortured while in police detention.
