Law enforcement officials at Yosemite National Park and other Sierra Nevada winter recreation areas are beginning to crack down on motorists who fail to heed regulations requiring snow tires or chains on their vehicles. The emphasis on the requirements came after several weekends marked by increased numbers of accidents on mountain roads in and around ski and snow play areas. Paul Anderson, Wawona district ranger, said the problem has been more severe in the Sierra this winter, because snows have been heavier and at lower elevations, making for more miles of icy and snow-covered roadways. There were 23 major vehicle accidents along California 41 during the Christmas-New Year’s holiday, authorities said.
