A 34-year-old Carlsbad man was killed Thursday morning when a dirt-scraping machine ran over him while he was working on a construction site.
Chris Rix, a grade checker for the P. L. Daniels Company, was driving survey markers into the ground on the 600 block of Cortez Avenue in Vista when the machine came up behind him, sheriff’s department spokeswoman Julie Sutton said.
The left front wheel of the machine ran over Rix’s right leg and abdomen, crushing the leg and causing numerous internal injuries, the coroner’s office said.
Rix was pronounced dead at the scene by Life Flight workers.
Sutton said that the driver of the machine never saw Rix and that the death was accidental.
