Emergency Declaration for County
Gov. George Deukmejian on Thursday proclaimed states of emergency in San Diego and two other counties as a result of the damage caused by wind, rain and coastal flooding from the recent storm.
Los Angeles and Orange counties were also named in the governor’s declaration, which is a necessary legal prerequisite for federal disaster assistance, according to spokesmen for the governor.
Deukmejian also asked the state Office of Emergency Services to coordinate with San Diego officials in assisting farmers who suffered crop damage from the storm that began Jan. 17.
Storm damage has thus far topped $68 million. It was responsible for the deaths of eight people; destroyed part of a pier; damaged homes, restaurants and a hotel, and forced scores of beachfront residents to flee coastline areas.
