A study of oil development in Alaska’s Prudhoe Bay shows extensive air and water pollution and widespread violations of environmental laws, conservationists said. They argued that further oil development should not be approved in the nearby Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, as proposed by the oil industry and the Reagan Administration. The study--sponsored by the Natural Resources Defense Fund, the National Wildlife Federation and Trustees for Alaska--concluded that “oil development in highly sensitive areas of the Arctic is not appropriate.”
