Most Japanese think they work too hard for too little money, according to a survey by Japan’s biggest labor federation. The poll of 26,800 of the 4.2-million member General Council of Trade Unions indicated that 70% consider themselves overworked and 90% complained they do not lead comfortable lives. The respondents, earning an average monthly salary of $2,000, said they would be comfortable with a $780 monthly raise. Most said they also wanted reduced working hours (62.2%) and better welfare and medical benefits (53.2%).
