LANSING, Mich. — A volunteer fire department was cited Friday for seven alleged violations of state law in the deaths of three firefighters during the burning of an abandoned house.
The three volunteers were killed Oct. 25 in the training exercise conducted by the Milford Township Fire Department.
The Occupational Safety and Health Act citations include civil penalties of $3,150, a spokesman for the state Labor Department said.
The citations, among other things, charge use of excessive amounts of flammable liquids, failure to prepare adequate escape routes, lack of sufficient preparation and allowing firefighters to enter the building without a hose line ready for emergency use. Each violation carried a $450 fine.
“During a training exercise, such as that in Milford, conditions can and must be controlled so that firefighters are not subject to hazards,” said Douglas Earle, director of the state bureau of safety and regulation.
