Free agent Bob Horner, rejecting a more lucrative offer to play again in Japan, joined the St. Louis Cardinals and promised to help fill the power gap left by Jack Clark’s departure to the New York Yankees.
Cardinal General Manager Dal Maxvill said Horner signed a one-year contract. Terms call for a base salary of $950,000, and Horner can make an additional $450,000 if he plays in 140 games. He also can earn up to $130,000 in award bonuses.
Horner signed with Yakult, of the Japanese Central League, in May of 1987 for $2 million, including benefits and incentives. Yakult had offered Horner $3 million for 1988 and $10 million total in a multi-year pact.
