Kevin Rembert’s 13-foot jumper with one second remaining lifted Mater Dei High School to a 46-44 boys’ basketball victory over St. Bernard Wednesday night at Mater Dei.
The Monarchs (11-4, 2-0), ranked third in the Big Five Conference, increased their Angelus League victory streak to 54 games.
“The ball could have gone to anyone,” said Rembert, who had 8 points and 9 rebounds. “It was not a set play, but I was back, and the ball came right to me.”
Guard Mark Raveling--son of USC’s basketball coach, George Raveling--had tied the game, 44-44, on a 3-point shot with 18 seconds left. Rembert then had a chance to put the Monarchs ahead with 13 seconds to go, but he missed two free throws.
The Vikings (11-5, 0-2) got the ball back but turned it over with five seconds remaining when a pass went off Raveling’s leg.
Mater Dei’s Mike Hopkins took the ball out of bounds and lofted a pass the length of the court to Rembert, who made the winning basket.
St. Bernard led, 23-18, at the half. The Vikings had a three-point lead early in the fourth period, but Mater Dei went on a 9-0 run with just less than five minutes to play to make it 38-31.
Keith Brown, Aron Williams and Ed Stokes all had 10 points for the Vikings. Mater Dei point guard Mark Ramstack also scored 10.
Bishop Amat 75, Servite 65--Bishop Amat (16-1, 2-0) had three players score at least 15 points, led by Stephon Pace’s 18, at home. Bishop Amat made 27 of 43 free-throw attempts. Nick Marusich scored 31 for Servite (10-5, 0-2).
