The condition of a man who had a liver transplant to treat him for poisoning by wild mushrooms was upgraded Wednesday, but his dinner companion remained in critical condition.
Wilhelm Winter, 45, was listed in serious condition at the UCLA Medical Center in Westwood, hospital spokesman Mike Byrne said. Cynthia Zheng, 19, who also underwent a transplant because of liver damage caused by the mushrooms, remained in critical condition, Byrne said.
The Oakland couple fell ill after mistakenly eating so-called death cup mushrooms they picked on a New Year’s Day outing in Marin County.
