Former Kirov ballet dancer Olga Zabotnika has issued a vehement attack on the Leningrad-based troupe’s director, Oleg Vinogradov, accusing him of applying the methods of serfdom and creating a closed zone for criticism. In an article published Wednesday in the weekly Literaturnaya Gazeta, Zabotnika said that Vinogradov gave precedence to organization over artistic merit to create his “personal collective” and demanded total subordination to his opinions. Zabotnika claims the Kirov’s troubles started after a series of defections during Western tours in the 1950s and 1960s.
