Girls’ Basketball : Burroughs Collapses in 4th Quarter
Burroughs High failed to protect an 11-point lead with four minutes left in the fourth quarter to play and lost in overtime to Schurr, 51-48, in a Foothill League game Tuesday night at Schurr.
Margie Thomas, who led the Indians with 15 points, was one of three Burroughs players to score in double figures. Debbie Penney and Wendy Bruse each scored 11 points. Penney had her best night of the season on the boards in pulling down a game-high 19 rebounds.
But Schurr’s Kris Ballesteros scored 13 of her game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter to spark the Spartans’ comeback.
“The turning point was the four-minute mark in the fourth quarter,†Burroughs Coach Brian Hurst said. “If we just kept our poise, we could have won. We just broke down a little bit, took a couple of poor shots and they got some rebounds at key times.â€
Burroughs shot 43% from the floor.
Burroughs is 13-3, 0-2 in the league. Schurr is 2-0 in the league.
Burbank 53, Alhambra 44--In her second game since recovering from a leg injury, Karrie Parsons, a senior center, had 19 points, 17 rebounds and 7 assists to help Burbank in the Foothill League game.
Teammate Christine Rumfola added 25 points and 14 rebounds for Burbank (9-4, 1-1).
Notre Dame 56, St. Genevieve 10--Andrea Banducci scored 13 of her game-high 25 points in the third quarter as Notre Dame coasted to a San Fernando Valley League win at St. Genevieve. Banducci, a 6-0 junior, had 21 rebounds and is averaging 17 a game. Denise DaCorsi added nine points and had nine rebounds for Notre Dame (6-6, 1-1).
Notre Dame plays host to Bell-Jeff tonight.
Hart 40, San Gabriel 30--Hart rebounded from a 12-2 deficit to win the Foothill League game at home. Desa Pecel led Hart with 12 points. Teammate Sara Wilson had eight rebounds and Nikki Brodowy had seven.
Thousand Oaks 69, Camarillo 38--Thousand Oaks remained undefeated in the Marmonte League with an easy win. Thousand Oaks (15-3, 4-0) was led by Barbara Tanner, who scored 21 points. Angie Long scored 13 points and Nicole Victoria added 12 for Camarillo (2-1 in the league).
