‘Zhivago’ Published in Moscow

MOSCOW — Boris Pasternak’s “Doctor Zhivago,” the controversial novel long suppressed by Soviet authorities, was published in the Soviet Union today, 31 years after its appearance in the West.
The publication of the first entire section of the novel, which is being serialized in five issues of the literary journal Novy Mir, crowned a three-decade effort by Pasternak’s son, Evgeniy, and was a victory for the glasnost (openness) reforms of Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev. The popular magazine Ogonek last month published excerpts in what was the first official appearance ever in the Soviet Union of the long-suppressed novel.
