Roth, Pickler Urged for Train Panel

The Orange County Transportation Commission on Monday recommended Anaheim Councilman Irv Pickler and Supervisor Don R. Roth for a California-Nevada commission that would develop plans for a Las Vegas-to-Southern California high-speed train, with a proposed terminal near Anaheim Convention Center.

Pickler, a Transportation Commission member, is seeking appointment by Assembly Speaker Willie Brown (D-San Francisco). Roth, who also is an Orange County Transit District board member, is seeking appointment by Gov. George Deukmejian.

Under legislation enacted last year, the Assembly Speaker has two appointments, one of whom must be from Orange County, the other from Los Angeles County.

The same legislation authorizes the governor to appoint four people, all of whom must be from Southern California. The Senate Rules Committee is entitled to select two members, one of whom must be from Riverside County, the other from San Bernardino County.

Under a bistate agreement, Nevada will select eight members based on its own procedures.

Pickler and Roth said they are seeking the appointments because they both see the proposed high-speed train as a way to link two big tourist areas.

The California-Nevada Super Speed Ground Transportation Commission faces a Jan. 1, 1992, deadline to prepare a study, secure rights of way and award a franchise for the construction and operation of a super train.
