A rookie police officer remained in critical condition Monday with a head wound he suffered when shot during a confrontation in an area of Southeast San Diego known for its illegal drug activity.
Officer Jerry Hartless, 24, of San Diego remained at UC San Diego Medical Center with a bullet lodged in his brain.
Hartless--who joined the force after graduating from the Police Academy in May--was shot in the forehead shortly after midnight Saturday after he and his partner had split up to chase two groups of people standing on a street corner of a residential area.
He has undergone two operations, but doctors have been unable to remove the bullet from his brain.
Stacy Don Butler, 24, was arrested Sunday in connection with the shooting.
