49ers Open PCAA Season Saturday Against Titans
Cal State Long Beach will open its Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. schedule Saturday night at 7:30 against Cal State Fullerton at home in the university gym.
Then on Monday night at 7, the 49ers will play 15th-ranked Nevada Las Vegas at the 12,000-seat Long Beach Arena. It will be the 49ers’ only game this season at the Arena. They have played before an average crowd of 1,426 in three games in their 2,000-seat gym.
The 49ers are 6-3 overall. Their fast-break offense has scored an average of 89.6 points a game. And their pressing defense has forced opponents into an average of 24 turnovers a game.
Guard Morlon Wiley leads the 49ers in scoring with a 20.6-point average. He’s also averaging 4.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 3 steals a game. Wiley, who shot only 39.6% from the field last season, is shooting 57.4% this year.
Forward Andre Purry is averaging 16.7 points a game, and center DeAnthony Langston is averaging 10.7.
Langston has the most rebounds, 50, followed by center John Hatten with 47 and Purry with 45.
Guard Billy Walker leads in assists with 49.
A tendency to foul too much has hurt the 49ers. Their opponents are averaging 33 free-throw attempts a game.
