Women’s Basketball Roundup : Howell’s 21 Points Help Lead USC Past East Carolina, 89-61

Junior forward Karen Howell scored 21 points to lead the USC women’s basketball team to an 89-61 victory over East Carolina Tuesday in the first round of the Old Dominion tournament at Norfolk, Va.

Kathy Hammond came off the bench to score 17 points for the Trojans (4-3). Center Cherie Nelson, USC’s leading scorer, played only 24 minutes and scored 13 points.

UCLA 84, UC Irvine 54--The Bruins used a 24-0 run early in the second half to take a 59-33 lead and went on to beat the Anteaters, 84-54, at Irvine.

Natalie Crawford’s basket with 19:47 left in the game cut UCLA’s lead to 35-33, but the Bruins then blanked the Anteaters (2-6) for almost nine minutes. Dora Dome led the Bruins (5-5) with 18 points.
