Harry Buckwitz, German Actor and Director
Harry Buckwitz, 83, a German director best known for staging the plays of Bertolt Brecht. He was an actor-director at several theaters in Germany until 1937 but worked as a hotel manager during the Hitler era. He returned to the stage after the end of World War II. As head of Frankfurt’s Staedtische Buehnen between 1951 and 1968, he popularized Brecht when most others declined to stage plays by the leftist playwright, who died in East Berlin in 1955. In Zurich on Sunday of cancer.
