“Two Daughters.” Nelson/Embassy. $29.95. This anthology film is based on two short stories by Rabindranath Tagore, favorite writer of the director-adaptor Satyajit Ray. The first of the pair, “The Postmaster,” is Ray at his greatest: a little masterpiece of tact, delicacy and human observation. It’s a simple study of a village postmaster who feels alienated from his surroundings--sickness, heat, an old madman caterwauling in his yard--and longs for his home in the city. Unknown to him, he is loved by his child maidservant: one of those pure, self-sacrificing loves that rarely repeats itself. The second, longer and lesser episode is about troubled marriage and a tomboy bride, and stars Soumitra Chatterjee (of “The Apu Trilogy” and “The Home and the World”). Information: (213) 285-6000. *** 1/2
