CAMPAIGN ’88 : Dole Aims Shot at Bush

Presidential contender and Senate Minority Leader Bob Dole (R-Kan.) rarely misses an opportunity to launch a one-line verbal missile at the GOP front-runner, Vice President George Bush.
Last Saturday, the government technically shut down because its spending authority had run out, and all but the most critical government employees were supposed to stay home.
One of the few who showed up for work was Dole, who was helping negotiate a compromise on spending legislation. And it clearly irritated him that his chief opponent could use the time to further his presidential aims.
“I don’t think Bush ought to be campaigning,” Dole quipped. “He’s a non-essential government employee.”
(For the record, the vice president’s office says Bush remained in Washington.)
