San Diego High School : Basketball Roundup : Santiago Leads Mar Vista to 52-51 Win in Overtime
SAN DIEGO — Rafael Santiago made two free throws with 11 seconds left in overtime Wednesday night to give Mar Vista High School a 52-51 victory over Chula Vista in a Metro Conference basketball game at Mar Vista.
Chula Vista had a 51-48 lead in overtime before Mar Vista rallied on a layup by Shawn Hicks and Santiago’s free throws. Chula Vista had three shots in the final 11 seconds but could not score.
Tim Nicolis scored 21 points for Mar Vista (3-3, 1-1) and Hicks added 13. Scott Matney scored 16 points to lead Chula Vista (1-1 in league).
In other Metro Conference games:
Sweetwater 55, Coronado 49--Carlos Campbell scored 23 points to lead the Red Devils (3-7, 2-0) at home. Sweetwater trailed at halftime, 27-25, but outscored Coronado, 13-4, in the third quarter. Jan Mallott led Coronado (0-2 in league) with 22 points.
Hilltop 56, Bonita Vista 34--Mark Dirksen scored 22 points and Jon Moore added 16 to lead visiting Hilltop (2-5, 1-0). Hilltop led, 37-29, after three quarters but outscored Bonita Vista, 19-5, in the fourth quarter. Bonita Vista is 0-2 in league.
In a nonleague game:
Clairemont 57, Rancho Buena Vista 54--Ray McDavid scored 18 points and Lamont Jackson added 17 to lead Clairemont (1-2) at home. Clairemont led, 44-32, after three quarters before Rancho Buena Vista rallied.
