Oceanside
A 10-year-old boy riding in the back of a pickup truck on California 76 northeast of Oceanside died when the truck went out of control and overturned, the California Highway Patrol reported Monday.
The boy, 10-year-old Henry Luna of Torrance, was pronounced dead at the scene Sunday afternoon, said CHP spokeswoman Tanda Pena.
The driver, Juan Gomez, 24, of Poway, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and manslaughter because he fled the scene of the accident, Pena said. She said Gomez was arrested at Palomar Memorial Hospital, where he went for treatment for his injuries.
Jesse Luna, 23, of Torrance, and Antonio Gomez, 15, of Poway also were riding in the back of the truck with Luna. They were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where Gomez was treated and released and Luna remains in fair condition.
Two other passengers were inside the truck with the driver. Manuel Gomez, 55, of Poway, was treated for minor injuries and released at the scene. Ezequel Gomez, 10, of Poway, was not injured.
The accident occurred at 2:05 p.m. on the westbound side of the highway, 100 feet west of Rice Canyon Road.
Juan Gomez was booked into the County Jail at Vista and released Monday morning on $10,000 bond, a jail spokesman said. Pena said she did not know if the victims were related.
