Alberto Tomba of Italy won his second World Cup ski race in three days Sunday at Sestriere, Italy, with a victory in the giant slalom, and in the process prevented Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden from a record 86th win.

Tomba, 20, who now has a 29-point lead in the World Ski Cup Series standings, won the special slalom Friday.

Tomba, who said he spent a sleepless night caused by stomach pain, was third-fastest in the first run and second-fastest in the second. The competition was run down the Kandahar track, which has a vertical drop of roughly 420 yards and has 49 gates. He was clocked in a winning aggregate of 2 minutes 19.51 seconds. He skied through a snowfall to set heat times of 1:12.21 and 1:07.30.

Pirmin Zurbriggen of Switzerland, defending World Cup champion, committed a pair of major mistakes while trying to make up time on his second run. He finished 23rd, one place ahead of Marc Girardelli of Luxembourg.

At Park City, Utah, Andreja Leskovsek of Yugoslavia and Joakim Wallner of Sweden won the women’s and men’s giant slaloms in Pro Cup tour races.
