Former House Speaker Thomas P. (Tip) O’Neill Jr., 74, was scheduled to undergo prostate surgery today at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, 12 days after doctors removed a malignant rectal tumor, a hospital spokeswoman said. Doctors plan to remove O’Neill’s enlarged prostate in a morning operation expected to take about two hours, hospital spokeswoman Kathleen O’Donnell said. Doctors had put off the prostate surgery because of the discovery of a silver-dollar-size tumor on O’Neill’s colon during tests at Washington’s Sibley Memorial Hospital about two weeks ago.
