Although the Golden West College men’s soccer team scored a goal just two minutes into its Southern California Regional match with San Diego Mesa, the Rustlers couldn’t produce another and were eliminated in the second round, 4-1, at Golden West Saturday.
Mike Weiss scored Golden West’s only goal, but San Diego Mesa’s Tom Crane tied the score 14 minutes later. Michael Murphy scored two goals within one minute--at the 19- and 18-minute marks of the first half--and added a third goal in the second half.
Golden West, which won the South Coast Conference, finishes the season 16-3-4.
San Diego Mesa advanced along with El Camino College, which defeated Rancho Santiago, 5-0, at Rancho Santiago. Friday, San Diego Mesa and El Camino will face two teams from Northern California in the state semifinals at El Camino.
