Tennis Roundup : Gomez, Gilbert Survive 1st-Round Tiebreakers
Top-seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador and Brad Gilbert won their opening-round matches Tuesday in the $516,000 Sul America tennis tournament at Rio de Janeiro.
Gomez defeated Derrick Rostagno, 6-3, 7-6, while Gilbert beat Roberto Saad of Argentina, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2.
In other matches, Cassio Motta of Brazil eliminated Amos Mansdorf of Israel, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0, and Emilio Sanchez of Spain defeated Jorge Lozano of Mexico, 6-3, 6-4.
Boris Becker of West Germany defeated Niklas Kulti of Sweden, 7-5, 6-3, in the first round of the $150,000 Young Masters tournament at Friedrichshafen, West Germany.
Becker, warming up for next week’s Masters tournament in New York, had trouble in the first set but regained his form in the second.
Also, Magnus Gustafsson of Sweden beat Claudio Pistolesi of Italy, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3; David Wheaton ousted Christian Bergstrom of Sweden, 6-4, 6-4; Alex Antonitsch of Austria eliminated Ulf Stenlund of Sweden, 6-2, 7-5; Patrick Kuehnen of West Germany downed Johan Carlsson of Sweden, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, and Jonas Svensson of Sweden beat Ola Kristiansson of Sweden, 6-1, 6-2.
