Local News in Brief : Illegal Aliens in Crash

Two dozen illegal aliens who crossed the Mexican border together and agreed to pay $200 each to be smuggled to Los Angeles were discovered Tuesday locked inside a truck abandoned by its driver after an accident in Norwalk, authorities said.

None of the aliens, including a 6-month-old baby, was injured when the two-axle truck carrying them slammed into the rear of another truck and into a car at 1:21 p.m., triggering a four-vehicle chain-reaction crash on the Santa Ana Freeway, California Highway Patrol Officer Lyle Whitten said.

The aliens were turned over to immigration agents for return to Mexico after questioning, Whitten said.

The aliens said they crossed the border from Mexico a few days earlier and made their way by mountain trails to an unspecified pickup point where they met the truck driver and agreed to pay $200 for the ride north.

Whitten said the truck, belonging to the National Sanitary Supply Co., was reported stolen Monday in San Diego.
