Museum Memorials for Susan Kockritz, 74
Memorial contributions to the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art are being accepted for Susan Kockritz, a longtime trustee and past president of the museum, who died in her La Jolla home Thursday after a long illness. She was 74.
Kockritz settled in La Jolla with her husband in 1951 and became active in the cultural community.
In addition to her service with the museum, Kockritz worked with the San Diego Museum of Art and Fellows of Contemporary Art. She was chairman of the La Jolla Musical Arts Society and was involved with the Friends of the UC San Diego Library, Balboa Art Conservation Center, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, San Diego Opera Assn., Junior League of San Diego, Wednesday Club, Charter 100 and Women of Distinction. She was also an honorary trustee of the La Jolla Chamber Music Society.
Kockritz was born in Philadelphia and lived in Washington, D.C., until she moved to California with her parents. In 1941 she married Frank Kockritz, an attorney.
Susan Kockritz was a graduate of UC Berkeley, and received a master’s degree from the University of Chicago. She taught at UC Berkeley and was a social worker at Children’s Hospital in San Francisco.
During World War II she worked with the Red Cross in Washington, D.C., and at the Navy Hospital in Alameda County.
She is survived by her husband, Frank; her brother, B. Marden Black of Rochester, Minn., and her mother, Mrs. Benjamin Black of Berkeley.
