Ugandan Troops ‘Smash’ Rebel Cult Movement

KAMPALA, Uganda — Ugandan troops “smashed” the Holy Spirit rebel movement of cult priestess Alice Lakwena, who was wounded and fled on a bicycle pushed by seven of her supporters, a Defense Ministry spokesman said Saturday.
“The group has been smashed and completely destroyed,” he said in a statement broadcast on Radio Uganda, adding that government troops killed more than 2,000 rebels during the past month.
He said Lakwena, the self-proclaimed priestess who has led about 4,000 rebels since March, was wounded earlier in the week in eastern Uganda and was seen fleeing by bike.
Lakwena, 27, used a powerful combination of African black magic and Christian evangelism to fuel her revolt.
