Local News in Brief : Quake Loan Program OKd

The Whittier City Council on Tuesday night approved the use of $361,000 in federal community development funds to establish grant and loan programs for homeowners whose earthquake damage was not covered by federal aid.
Senior citizens and handicapped homeowners will be eligible for grants of up to $5,000, and no-interest and low-interest loans of up to $20,000 will be made available to all affected homeowners.
The council also donated $100,000 to the Whittier Earthquake Disaster Relief Fund and appointed a five-member committee to distribute the fund, which now has $290,000.
