Cal State Fullerton upset eighth-ranked Nevada Las Vegas, 2-1, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. men’s soccer match Sunday on Titan Field.
The Titans (11-7, 4-4), who broke UCLA’s 26-game winning streak Wednesday, kept the Rebels (11-5, 6-2) on the defensive through much of Sunday’s wet, muddy match.
Freshman midfielder Eamon Kavanagh scored Fullerton’s first goal with an assist from senior Chuck Smoot at 41:37. Smoot added the game-winner 29 seconds later on a penalty shot, leading the Titans to a 2-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, freshman goalkeeper Jay Nettekoven stopped UNLV’s Simon Keith on a penalty shot at 59:22. But Rebel forward Cliff Odle took a pass from Kenny Ryerson to score from 12 yards out to cut the advantage to 2-1.
In nonconference water polo:
UC Irvine 11, UCLA 7--Greg Wilson and Kevin Wood each scored three goals, and Mike Wilson added two to lead fifth-ranked Irvine over the Bruins in the PCAA/Pac-10 tournament at Belmont Pool in Long Beach. Goalkeeper Chris Duplanty had 12 saves for the Anteaters.
In a later game:
USC 11, UC Irvine 9--The Trojans built a 7-2 halftime lead, but Irvine scored five goals to tie the score, 7-7, with 5:47 remaining. Both teams scored once moments later to tie the score at 8-8.
With less than two minutes remaining, Keith Leggett scored to give the Trojans a 9-8 lead, which USC did not relinquish.
Julian Harvey led the Anteaters (12-7, 5-1) with three goals. Robert Lynn and Zoltran Berty led USC (17-5) with three goals each.
In nonconference volleyball: Chapman College (11-17, 4-3) lost to fourth-ranked Portland State, 16-14, 15-12, 15-8, and fifth-ranked North Dakota State, 15-5, 15-13, 15-6, to finish sixth at the Nebraska-Omaha Invitational volleyball tournament at Omaha.
