Orange County Prep Cross-Country : Lavelle and Shryock Lead Corona del Mar to Title

The Corona del Mar High School boys’ and the Newport Harbor girls’ teams breezed to victories Friday in the Sea View League cross-country finals at Irvine Park in Orange.

Corona del Mar, the top-ranked boys’ team in Orange County and the Southern Section 4-A, won with 26 points. The Sea Kings were led by Eddie Lavelle (second, 14 minutes 37 seconds), Greg Shryock (third, 14:50), Jim Robbins (fourth, 14:53), Paul Scott (eighth, 15:23) and Hunter Pierce (ninth, 15:32).

Tustin (68 points) finished second, followed by Newport Harbor (70), University (87), Saddleback (100) and Estancia (178).

Jim Geerlings of Newport Harbor won the boys’ race, covering the flat, three-mile course in 14:31.

In the girls’ race, Kim Robinson of Newport Harbor won in 17:53 to lead the Sailors, who won with 26 points. Leslie Cashion of Corona del Mar was second (18:08) and teammate Johanna Wallin third (18:11). Tustin and Corona del Mar tied with 63 points, but the Tillers advance to the Southern Section preliminaries as the second-place team because of its better dual meet record.

In the Empire League:

Freshman Martha Pinto of Katella finished the hilly, three-mile course at Craig Regional Park in Fullerton in 19:01 to win the girls’ race, but Esperanza placed five runners in the top seven positions to win the meet with 23 points. Esperanza and Los Alamitos are co-league champions.

In the boys’ race, Katella freshman Danny Moreno (17:22) outkicked an Esperanza runner in the final 10 yards to finish 17th and give the Knights a 43-44 victory over Esperanza. Oliver Bolhman of El Dorado won the race in 15:44, and Brian Hild of Esperanza was second (16:04).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Woodbridge swept both races to win the boys’ and girls’ titles on the flat, three-mile course at Laguna Hills.

Steve Frisone of Laguna Hills, undefeated in league, won the boys’ race in 15:24, and teammate Tony Gibney was second in 15:33. Woodbridge, which won with 49 points, was led by Richard Heppenstall (third, 15:38), Steve Dohman (fourth, 15:40), Geoff Goodson (ninth, 16:05), Chris Betke (15th, 16:27) and Lance Hauge (18th, 16:39).

Trabuco Hills was second with 62 points, followed by Laguna Hills (71), Laguna Beach (84), Orange (103) and Costa Mesa (123).

In the girls’ race, the Warriors won with 22 points, followed by Laguna Hills (48), Orange (81), Laguna Beach (91), Costa Mesa (155) and Trabuco Hills (170).

Freshman Amy Robles of Woodbridge won the race, finishing in 18:38. The Warriors were helped by Cathi Peck (second, 19:08), Laura Peck (fourth, 19:45), Kaci Keffer (sixth, 20:03) and Shannon Kane (ninth, 20:31).
