Typhoon Lynn swept nine schoolchildren out to sea and sank seven fishing boats and damaged 50 others when it sideswiped southern Taiwan. Rescuers found the bodies of three of the children, who were swept out to sea by 20-foot waves near Hengchun. At least 200 houses in the Philippines were destroyed by the typhoon’s 103-m.p.h. winds, but no casualties were reported. Officials said that at least five towns north of Manila were flooded and residents were being rescued from neck-deep water.
