The ashes of an anonymous transient, who died trying to save a drowning woman in Sacramento, have been claimed by a man who said he is the brother of the would-be hero. The Sacramento Union reported that Steve Keith of Coeur d’Alene, Ida., identified the dead man as his brother, Anthony Curtis Keith, apparently resolving a mix-up over his name. Authorities had used a birth certificate found on the drowned man and the statement of an acquaintance to identify him as Daniel Joseph Read. But the real Read was found alive in rural Missouri. The would-be hero died Sept. 19 while trying to aid a passenger of a truck that plunged off the Tower Bridge after the drawbridge was raised without warning. That passenger survived, but two others died. Authorities said that Steve Keith identified his brother from photos of the corpse.
