The State : 3 Arrested in Capitol Protest

Three Greenpeace members were arrested after they hung a bright-yellow sign protesting the Deukmejian Administration’s toxics policies on the state Capitol in Sacramento. The environmental activist organization is opposed to several proposed incineration plants that would burn hazardous wastes that were being considered by Gov. George Deukmejian’s Task Force on Toxic Waste Management, meeting in the Capitol. The 30-by-15-foot banner said, “To: Duke (Deukmejian) and Legislature, From: People of California, Subj: No Toxic Burn, Reduce It, Don’t Produce It, Greenpeace.†Arrested when they let themselves down the four-story Capitol wall on ropes, mountain climber-style, were Laurel Black, 36, of Seattle, and Eric Johnson, 26, of San Francisco. A third person, Allan Byrd of San Francisco, was arrested on the roof.
